BEIS delays start of New and Replacement Obligation (NRO)

BEIS has postponed the introduction of a new obligation on Energy Suppliers to install a smart meter when replacing a traditional meter or fitting one for the first time.

In January 2019, BEIS stated its intention to activate the New and Replacement Obligation (NRO) on the 31st March 2019. After stakeholder consultation, it was decided that more time was needed for most organisations to deliver a mature SMETS2 service to their customers.

The implementation date has been moved to June 30 2019. From this date, Suppliers will need to take ‘all reasonable steps’ to install a smart meter. Exceptions are where a meter cannot be installed for technical or practical reasons, in emergency circumstances or where a consumer wishes to retain a traditional meter.
